Sustainability

Parehua Country Estate is set within a beautiful environment framed by a stunning backdrop of rural landscape distinctive of the South Wairarapa. Native trees & flaxes have been planted throughout the estate and established Willows and flora surround our private lake – which is home to our resident duck family above and eel family below. You can almost hear the grass grow at Parehua it’s so peaceful and quiet – this is the environment that we value at Parehua and consider paramount for our guests.* Typically New Zealand and a place for both New Zealanders and overseas guests to unwind and rejuvenate body mind & soul.

At Parehua we want to protect the future of this beautiful country we have been given. We are conscious of our responsibility to preserve and take care of and minimise our effects on our precious environment.

We are currently registered with Green Globe the worldwide benchmarking and certification system for the travel and tourism industry across the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental management. Parehua will be spending the next 4-6 months gathering information to be benchmarked with Green Globe and will be able to better implement our action plan for the future.

Since opening in February 2006 we are making the following small steps to becoming sustainable:

  • Ongoing planting of native trees, flaxes and various plant life on the 2.25 hectares of estate.
  • Recycling our glass, metal, plastic and paper waste
  • Recycling our food waste through composting and food for ‘Elvis’ the pig
  • Using local and organic sourced produce where always possible
  • Printing our brochures on recycled paper
  • Use of a mulching mower on all our grounds
  • Manually filter our salt-water pool
  • Encourage our Guests to be energy efficient during their stay
  • Working with suppliers who are committed to sustainable business policies
  • Double Glazing of all our windows and glass doors in our function areas
  • Supporting local vineyards who are members of the Sustainable Winegrowing Scheme
  • Employing members of our local community
  • Continual reflection, revision and implementing of our sustainable action plan

* please note that the peace and quiet is slightly disturbed by CO2 popper guns during the months of February to April each year to deter birds from eating the precious fruit of the vines.
